Why Is My Printer Is In An Error State Windows 11?

Is the printer connected to your system showing the error message “Printer Is In An Error State Windows 11”? Is this occurring every time you are trying to send your files to the printer? This article is a comprehensive guide on how to fix the printer in error state problem. Simply just enact these fixes on your computer to solve the problem easily.



Fix 1 – Make sure the printer is in Online mode


Check the connection cable to the printer and the power socket. Test it out again.

If your printer is connected to your computer using WiFi, try restarting the Wifi and reconnecting to it again.


  • First of all, just right-click on the Windows key and click on “Run“.

  • Type “control printers” and hit Enter.

  • Here you will see all of your printer devices.

  • Select the printer you want to check. Then, check the “Status” of the printer on the status bar of the Control Panel. It will show the Printer status as ‘Offline‘.

  • Now, right-click on the printer and click on “Use Printer Online” to use it.


Fix 2 – Enable legacy plug-and-play detection


You have to configure the plug-and-play detection settings to ‘Legacy’ mode.


  • First of all, right-click on the Windows icon and click on “Device Manager“.

  • Once the Device Manager opens up, right-click on the “Ports (COM & LPT)” and click on “Properties“.

  • Go to the “Port settings” tab*.

  • Here, click on the radio button beside the option “Use any interrupt assigned to the port” settings.

  • Then, tick marks the option “Enable legacy Plug and Play detection” settings.

  • Finally, click on “OK” to save the settings.


Upon opening the Properties screen, if you see that there is no ‘Port settings’ tab, do this –


  • Just expand the “Ports (COM & LPT)“.

  • Then, right-click on the “Printer Port” and click on “Properties“.


After this, close the Device Manager screen and restart your computer. After restarting, try to print something and check if it still shows the Error State message.


Fix 3 – Start-stop the spooler


Start-stop the spooler on your computer to fix this issue.


  • Type “cmd” in the search box.

  • Then, just right-click on the “Command Prompt” and click on “Run as administrator“.

  • Once the Command Prompt appears, type these two commands and hit Enter.


Close the Command Prompt window. Then, try to print something and check if this works.


Fix 4 – Run the printer troubleshooter


  • Press the Windows button and the ‘S’ key and write “Troubleshoot“.

  • Then, hit ‘Enter‘.

  • After that, scroll down and click on “Additional Troubleshooters“.

  • Now, click on the “Printer” to run this troubleshooter.

  • After highlighting it, just click on “Run the troubleshooter“.

  • Here, you can click on the “Advanced” option.


A common issue that could lead to trouble like this is related to the paper tray. If your HP Printer is in an error state occurs and you think “Printer Is In An Error State Hp Windows 10”, firstly, you must power down the device. Then, you are required to load the paper and then turn it on back again, and then wait for a few minutes until it is ready.
